Presenting a chordless quartet format, saxophonist Frank Talbot looks to experiment with the harmonic freedom and freer improvisatory concepts the chordless set up allows for.
Bringing some arrangements of his classic tunes, some totally fresh compositions and explorations and some of his other favourite tunes, the Franktastic Four promises an evening of excitement and contrasts.
Talbot brings his usual somewhat programmatic compositional style in the set up popularised and naturally influenced by the great Ornette Coleman, and attempts to explore improvisation based around melodies, motifs or intervals/diads without conforming strictly to exact chordal harmony.
Graduating from the New Zealand School of Music in 2018, Talbot has already had a varied performing career, playing various chairs in the saxophone section of the Rodger Fox Big Band, Clarinet in the RNZAF Band, Playing with pop groups such as the Julie Lamb Outfit and afrobeat group Bohemian Thought.
As well as taking his own quartet on numerous tours throughout the country and releasing his debut album Mundane Life Updates on Rattle Records in 2022, as well as an EP Speed Rat, and featuring on the recently released JM Jazz World Orchestra Album recorded in Zagreb, Croatia.
Bringing with him some of Auckland's best jazz musicians Forrest Thorp (Katchafire, Hipstamatics), Wil Goodinson and Ben Frater.
