Auckland quartet Silk Cut indulge their affection for early nineties shoe gaze and dream-pop with a live presentation of their forthcoming album ‘Our Place In The Stars’.
Silk Cut is fronted by seasoned tunesmith and guitarist Andrew Thorne, with Justin McLean (guitar/vocals), Aidan Phillips (bass/vocals), and Jayden Lee
(drums). The bedrock of two guitars, bass and drums features against a simple backdrop of keyboard washes and effects.
Their opening brace of EPs (‘Astronaut’ and ‘Panda’) are described as:
“Dreamy landscapes framed by crystalline, shimmering guitars”, with “Indelible melodies”...”buttressed by an extra-terrestrial spaced out psychedelia” (Backseat Mafia),
“The reverberating guitar, the consistent background synth, and rock ’n’ roll type drums carve out a landscape of ’70s and ’80s synth-pop but with a modern ethereal, and dreamy twist.”
(NZ Musician)
“Songs with sounds inspired by the likes of Ride, The Church, Radiohead, Swervedriver, and Slowdive.”
(Hamilton Underground Press)
To these characteristics ’O u r P l a c e I n T h e S t a r s ’ adds pace , weight , and progressive overtones, engendering a live experience for both body and mind.
Christina Cusiel opens the night with her haunting, cinematic gorgeousness.
