Gig Information

Join Y.C. Liu for his very first home-town show, as he celebrates the release of his debut single 'Some Nights' (out on November 25). The concert will be an intimate presentation of music and stories written over the past few years. From grief to gratitude, sorrow to ecstasy, from 100-day lockdowns in Naarm, to reckoning with the inter-generational lineage of mothers, grandmothers, and great-grandmothers, Y.C. Liu leaves no stone unturned.

The event is limited to 30 tickets and is BYO.

With special guest Mali Mali.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS

Y.C. LIU

Born in Taipei and raised in Tāmaki Makaurau, Naarm-based singer-songwriter Y.C. Liu is no stranger to migration. Just like moving to a new place allows for reinvention, Liu’s songs are invitations for the truest and deepest parts of ourselves to emerge amid often difficult and uncertain emotional terrain.

His music is lush with evocative imagery attuned to the most subtle turns of the heart, reminiscent of writers like Sufjan Stevens and Joni Mitchell. Guided by his distinctive, velvet baritone voice, flickering guitar chords and choir-harmonies, his debut single ‘Some Nights’ has an unmistakeable warmth that evokes the image of a family huddled around a campfire at dusk. Written after the passing of his father, it is a tender ode that explores the unravelling of identity in the wake of loss, and is the first song to emerge from a collection set for release in 2023.

MALI MALI

Some artists explode with a bang. Others diligently build an oeuvre of work, with their audience clamouring to lay hands on every new release. Mali Mali is one of the latter, their new album I Was Told to Keep an Eye Out (the fourth in just seven years) releasing a stream of sophisticated pop storytelling into the world with both urgency and deceptive ease.

Both meditative and confronting, Mali Mali (real name Ben Tolich)'s songwriting speaks with poetic and wry aplomb to matters of the head and heart. With their flowing piano melodies echoing Peter Jefferies, and the delicately constructed layers of texture akin to Talk Talk’s post-rock musings, Tolich elegantly tows a line between classic pop-songwriting and aural experimentation, inviting listeners to revel in image and aural energy that is at once abundant, unsettling and adventurous.
