Prepare to fall in love with emerging alt-indie artist Goodnight My Darling (Maxine Macaulay), beginning with her ethereal wonder self-titled debut album.
The Te Whanganui-a-Tara songwriter, producer and vocalist, is showcasing immense growth in her sound. She has moved away from her previously released electronic music into glittery, hypnotic, shoegaze, indie-alt-band joy. Think French for Rabbits, Nadia Reid, Aldous Harding and Angel Olsen. The album is introspective, soothing and an absolute triumph for the up-and-coming artist, who draws on her adventures living and performing abroad in Melbourne, Japan and most recently Berlin.
With the exception of the drums and cello being recorded at The Surgery in Wellington, ‘Goodnight My Darling’ the album was recorded & mixed by Toby Lloyd at Tiny Triumph Recordings, then mastered by Robin Schmidt @ 24-96 Mastering in Berlin. Goodnight My Darling’s band includes Ingrid Saker (Lead Guitar), Kim Andrews (drums), Connor Taumoepeau (synths) & Mitch Kirk (bass). Bird Machine are Luke and Jenna Grbin, a pair of lovers from Geelong, Australia, and Hamilton, New Zealand. Combining distinct musical sensibilities, their songs reminisces on early 90s alt-rock and dreampop with inflections of folk, wrapped up in plush pop melodies. Their jointly penned lyrics, at once commentative and introspective, shimmer within layered vocals above a swirling tapestry of guitars, keys, and syncopated beats. Their songs are written, performed, recorded, and produced by the two in a little bedroom in the New Zealand suburbs. Today, the two challenge each other’s songwriting and compositional conventions to synthesise their distinct styles.
With an array of written songs up their sleeves, the duo are set to release their debut EP on November 25th and with their deft backing band behind them -- drummer Coleman Strother and Bassist Dan Harrison -- Bird Machine are bringing you a live show that is dynamic and nuanced. Join the band for their debut EP performance and don't forget to follow Bird Machine on socials!
