As part of the Festival of India weekend on the Kāpiti Coast, Waterlily & Co are very proud to present this rare opportunity for musicians to learn and jam with some of Aotearoa's finest classical Indian musicians in the beautiful seaside village of Paekākāriki.
Suitable for musicians of all ages from intermediate to professional level. Prior knowledge of Indian music not essential. Attendees can bring any acoustic instruments of their choice while tutors will play Tablas, Sitar, Violin, and Indian Harmonium. Please bring a cushion for seating.
The Ensemble comprises of three generations of the Madhur whanau on tablas, sitar, violin and Indian harmonium. Basant is the director of the renowned Sargam School of Indian Music (Auckland) and tutors there with brother Deepak and father Professor Shukdev Madhur who specialises in violin. Professor Shukdev is a recipient of the National Award from the President of India for his services to music. Basant's daughter Sargam on sitar and nephew Akhilesh on tabla complete the Ensemble.
Tabla master Basant has won numerous numerous awards in India and accompanied international legends such Grammy winner Vishwa Mohan Bhatt (Ry Cooder), flautists Ronu Majumdar (Ravi Shankar) and Rakesh Chaurasia, alto saxophonist Kadri Gopalnath, and mridangam master Patri Satish Kumar. He has also collaborated with Western musicians in fusion music.

1. Introduction to Indian classical music with a brief history
2. Introduction to a Raaga and notes of the Indian music scale
3. We will teach a composition based on the one raaga, which can be learnt on any melodic instruments (guitar/piano/violin/saxophone/ukulele/flute, percussion etc)
4. How to improvise on a raaga
5. Q&A
If time allows: a brief talk about the Indian Rhythm system known as Taal.

Authentic Indian dishes from Hema Patel of Sai Spice fame and members of the Kāpiti Indian community will be available to partake at the venue or takeaway. Other Sunday attractions include stalls featuring Indian clothing and jewellery, mehndi (henna) hand painting, children's performances, and more TBC. Cash only.
SUNDAY 6- 8PM: CLASSIC FILM: Shakespeare Wallah (1965). $10.
English and Hindi with subtitles. Romance-comedy.
Starring superstar Shashi Kapoor, Felicity Kendal (BBC's The Good Life), Madhur Jaffrey. Music by Satyajit Ray.

The film is loosely based on Kendal's family history. Geoffrey Kendal's theatre company Shakespeareana travelled throughout India in the 1940s and 50s performing Shakespeare plays to royalty and bemused villagers alike. Shakespeare Wallah was the second film made by the Merchant-Ivory team and is screened here with their permission.
