How do songs get made? Why do songs get made? And is the making of them influenced by the place where the making gets done?
Some questions have been explored, wrestled with and jumped around on by local singer and folk songwriter Adam McGrath within this project.
All songs are about something, whether inane or of impenetrable depth they all hope to express a story, of the heart, of the head, of history or of hope, they all locate themselves somewhere and once they’ve taken shape can be carried anywhere in the telling or singing as the case may be. The life of a song, its journey from creation to performance, is a curious and exciting one and the transference from writer to listener ensures it a life beyond the moment where it is first marked down or heard.
Folk music is travelling music, designed for long journeys, between places but also between people, it speaks from one to another and then another and then so on and so on. Yet despite all this movement it always locates itself. This salient point is key, in the creation by McGrath of these songs; they are local songs made locally by a local writer.
Songs are elusive but stories aren’t they’re happening everywhere, everybody carries them and every place echoes with them.
Over the past year, Adam has situated himself in various locales around the city and has snagged a few as they passed. He has gathered local stories, specific to each local area the spaces are in.
Now, these songs are written and recorded, McGrath will partake in a series of performances in three locations where they began.
