Following the release of her long awaited sophomore album 'Mother Of Gloom', Wellington alt-folk artist Emily Fairlight is bringing her show to Auckland.
The album was recorded in Austin Texas with Doug Walseth of The Cat's Eye studio and mixed in Lyttelton by Ben Edwards at The Sitting Room. Featuring the single 'The Escape', this album has piqued the interest of many including RNZ, Off The Tracks, The 405 (EU) and many others.
Mother of Gloom though, is its own world. It’s an album that was released just a few weeks ago – but it could have existed 15 or 45 years ago. It’ll live on strong for many, many years to come. It’s a wonderful set of songs that’s painted in forlorn brush strokes, yet there’s a brightness and warmth in the playing, in the spaces within the songs. It never outstays its welcome. It begs to be played again and again. And again.
- Simon Sweetman @ Off The Tracks
Fairlight’s songs lend themselves to Americana, still there is also something universal about them, and the best ones here distil moments of emotional turmoil into palpable images anyone could feel.
