Local surf-punk four piece Big Beach Ocean Surf King are about to begin recording their second EP. To help cover some of the production costs, they're putting on a show at Christchurch's hottest new venue, Lyttelton Records. They'll be joined on the night by powerhouse punk trio, Nervous Jerk!
Big Beach Ocean Surf King is the project of Christchurch local, Cameron Hoy (Villain, Moonpup). What began as an experimental surf rock bedroom recording project, has evolved into a dynamic and exciting four piece live band. The Big Beach sound is characterised by reverb laden duelling guitar lines, melodic bass riffs, frantic surf beats and coarse vocals which describe exaggerated episodes of Hoy’s life, seasoned with ideas clearly obtained in the pursuit of an undergraduate philosophy degree. Last year Big Beach Ocean Surf King released their debut EP “Forever Surfing On’, featuring singles ‘Surf Rock’ and ‘Post-Wave’ which have received rotation on alternative radio stations RDU, Radio One, and RadioActive. For the live show, Hoy is joined by Sean James (Out Cold, Van Houten), Shaun McTague (Villain) and Robbie Bowers. With influences ranging from Man or Astro-Man? to Metallica, Dick Dale to DIIV and a myriad of surf, punk, post-punk, dream pop and shoegaze artists in between, the Big Beach Ocean Surf King live show is a unique experience and is not to be missed.

Hailing from the working class back streets of Christchurch and practicing in a storage unit in the woolston badlands is Nervous Jerk. A power pop trio settling into their third year as a band. Although having always been welcome in the New Zealand punk and hardcore scene, Nervous Jerk have never tried to restrain themselves to a fixed genre, taking influence in anything from power pop, punk, surf, grunge or good old rock n roll. Nervous Jerk consider themselves a band that are happy to turn their hand to anything, so long as it's loud, fast and DIY.
