The Performance Arcade is back, and music curator Thomas Friggens is pleased to present a line-up of over 30 bands and artists as part of the Live Music Series programme, a hand-picked selection of fresh tunes: from lazy afternoon sessions into buoyant evening sets.
This February - March, The Performance Arcade 2018 will showcase an innovative programme of free performance events and interactive experiences within a unique architecture of shipping containers on Wellington Waterfront. Since 2011 The Live Music Series has developed a reputation amongst musicians and fans as an exciting opportunity to discover new sounds, try new ideas, and encounter some of the best from Wellington’s formidable music scene.
A pop-up bar provides exclusive Arcade brews from Tuatara and wine from Leftfield, while Food For the People cook up the best in hot foods using local ingredients. Sunshine hours will be cooled by our popular frozés, back from selling out in 2017.
An exciting premiere performance by Tyrone Mackintosh and his project Zackariah the Explorer will feature Tyrone using a Tesla Coil as part of his live sonic art performance, combining elements of electronica and dance with specially produced animations and graphic scores.
Wellington singer-songwriter Neil Macleod will be playing two intimate late afternoon performances. Known for his gracious composition and skillfully crafted vocals, Neil’s music has been compared to early acoustic Pink Floyd. After releasing his seventh ep Sonder back in November, Neil has played a number of shows including a stripped back live set on Radio New Zealand as part of their Music at Night programme.
Week Two highlights include Pressure Cooker, the brainchild of Paekakiriki light and music collective Kuki Koori projecting light beams onto the shipping containers. Iain Gordon of Fat Freddy’s Drop, and artist Mick Finn will be cooking up a sonic and visual feast from scratch, with Iain and his electronic instruments laying down a trail of hypnotic notes to be chased my Mick’s swirling and ephemeral dashes of painted light.
The Arcade’s second Saturday will see the highly anticipated return of Berlin based Kiwi drummer Reece McNorton performing as Big Flip the Massive, a chaotic mash of organic live drums deeply intertwined with electronic experimentation and interactive 3D visuals. McNorton’s project has strong roots in glitch and avant garde.
The Performance Arcade would like to acknowledge the support of presenting partners Trustpower, funding partners Creative New Zealand and Wellington City Council, and event partners Whitireia, Geeves Scaffolding Ltd, and Metro Production Services in supporting the Live Music Series 2018.
