The last Old Hall Gig for 2015 will feature music from Wellington band Groeni, a screening of film work by artist Joanna Margaret Paul, and a bit of a party to celebrate the end of the year.
The gig will take place in the hidden gem that is the Irish Society Hall, located in central Wellington. It has an upstairs and downstairs hall, both of which we'll be putting to good use during the evening; the bar upstairs will be open throughout (and after the gig), and the screening & performance will take place downstairs.
Groeni are a folk-tinged electronica trio whose music has been gaining traction with audiences both internationally and at home. They have been championed by BBC 3 & 6 (UK) and KCRW (LA), and are on the lineup for the Laneway Festival next year. They recently played a sold-out show in Wellington with the release of their 3rd EP Hinde.
The band has been described as ‘having more atmosphere than Jupiter’, with Alexander Green’s delicate vocals set over intimate electronic soundscapes. The music is beautiful, eerie and intoxicating all at once.
Also at this Old Hall Gig will be a screening of Through a Different Lens/Film Work by Joanna Margaret Paul. This screening is curated by Peter Todd and commissioned by CIRCUIT Artist Film and Video Aotearoa New Zealand with the support of Creative New Zealand and the estate of Joanna Margaret Paul.
Often shot and edited in camera, the film work of Joanna Margaret Paul (1955–2003) chronicled motherhood and domestic life, the worn traces of urban settlement and the the natural world. Through a Different Lens/Film Work by Joanna Margaret Paul is a programme of recently digital restorations of films shot in the 1970s and early 1980s. Several of the films in this programme were recently premiered by CIRCUIT at the 2015 London Film Festival.
This Old Hall Gig will be a little different in that it is not BYO, but there will be a fully functioning bar on site.
Come along and celebrate the last Old Hall Gig of 2015 with us, we'd love to see you there.
