Dunedin psych-pop songwriting genius Kane Strang makes his first ever Wellington appearance in this tiny, strictly limited capacity gig at the Long Hall in Roseneath. Kane is 21 years old and is on the Dunedin label Fishrider Records. His music is beautiful and lo-fi, and he writes some of the most engaging songs we’ve heard for a very long time.
Also in the programme is the animated short ‘Queenie’, a 2014 SXSW selection directed by Wellington’s own Paul Neason. SXSW’s synopsis of the film is this: Intricately handmade from paper and cardboard, this stop-motion animated tragicomedy follows Danny, a university Geography tutor, as he and his students stray from the syllabus in order to break new academic ground. After managing only to break some homewares, Danny is forced to confront the true nature of his project.
Two Wellington writers will also give readings of their work – Bill Nelson, poet, and Pip Adam, short story writer and novelist. Bill is a Biggs Poetry Prize winner whose work has appeared in Hue and Cry, Sport and the Lumière Reader among others. He is also writer and co-editor for Up Country. Pip Adam published her debut novel I’m Working on a Building last year, has a PhD in Creative Writing from Victoria University, and has been described as 'one of the most exciting new writers around’ by Damien Wilkins.
And finally, making the most of the extraordinary headland location of the hall, we’ll be starting the evening with an outdoor solo performance from trumpeter-extraordinaire Lex French, overlooking the harbour. You’re welcome.
This is going to be a really special gig, and in true Old Hall Gigs style, will have a very limited capacity. If you want to come, buy your tickets early – there are only 65 available and there will be no door sales for this show.
