LUMINATE FESTIVAL 2013
When: 30th Jan - 6th Feb 2013

Where: Takaka Hill, Canaan Downs Rd, Takaka, Golden Bay, Nelson -Tasman, New Zealand
Website: www.luminatefestival.co.nz

Luminate is an earth-friendly festival of music, dance, art and culture with a focus on environmental sustainability, intentional community, knowledge sharing, creativity and inspiration.
Luminate is a place to revitalise your mind, spirit and body, and celebrate a sense of conscious community choosing to make the shift into an enlightened and compassionate paradigm that looks after our amazing planet. A family friendly event, Luminate is a truly diverse festival experience for all ages.
Music: Luminate delivers a stunning line up of international and Kiwi artists, offering a broad diversity of live & electronic genres over 5 zones, including world grooves, gypsy, pacific, maori, celtic, indigenous, folk, roots, reggae, jazz, funk, fusion, dub, breaks, psytrance, tech house, progressive, minimal, glitch, dubstep, electro-swing, nu-jazz, ambient and ethnic beats.
Find your rhythm at the Live Stage with live bands, fusion musicians and electronic producers; get your fix of dance music at the Electronic Zone, go primal with the drums and indigenous beats of Tribal, take it horizontal in the Chillout Lounge with downtempo grooves and cabaret, or bring an instrument and join in the fun at the Buskers stage.
5 zones of Workshops: include permaculture, alternative energy, yoga, holistic health techniques, circus skills, quantum science, african drumming, dance & movement, electronic music production, improvisation, harakeke, and lots more. At night you can find a range of enlightening movies & docos.
Other features: The Juggle-Poi-Toy zone hosts fire performances by night, and by day hosts sessions on circus skills from juggling, poi, hula hoops to stilts, slackline and unicycling. Other activities for the kids include games, storytelling and crafts. The Healing Hub offers a range of alternative therapies & workshops. Browse the market for hand-made arts & crafts, and meet your mates for some healthy kai - food outlets serve a wide range of delicious meals and treats of global cuisine. All cafes run by Luminate, including the popular earth-fired pizza oven, are vegetarian and Organic.
Earth-friendly: Composting toilets, building with natural & recycled materials, eco solutions for hot water and showers, earth oven cooking, waste minimisation, re-using resources, solar power, and lots more. There are no rubbish bins or recycling facilities on site. Be prepared to pack out what you bring in and leave no trace. Bring your own plate and cup for the market traders. Dishwashing and composting areas are provided nearby.
Camping & facilities: Extensive camping in the 200 acre site of Canaan Downs means there’s plenty of space for friends and family to park up together, and quiet places too. 2000 ft atop Takaka hill, the rolling grassland surrounded by native beech forest and limestone outcrops is an enchanting environment, and a haven for Hobbit fans eager to match movies scenes to the actual location.
Bring bikes to explore the fabulous landscape, a great way for kids and adults to cruise between the camping and event site.
Timing: Inspired by the ancient seasonal festival of Lughnasadgh, the timing of Luminate is midway between the summer solstice and autumn equinox, when our ancestors would give thanks to the earth mother for the abundance of the harvest, and join together from far and wide to share inspiration, learning and celebration.
Luminate runs for 8 days and nights to give time for people to relax, unwind, make the most of the wide range of entertainment and workshops on offer, and to experience intentional community making sustainable choices and having lots of fun.
Luminate connects the ancient traditions with the present, welcomes participants from throughout Aotearoa-New Zealand and all around the planet, and invites us to activate earth-friendly, co-creative, resilient communities worldwide.
