Back by popular demand! The Wellington International Ukulele Orchestra (WIUO) are excited to announce our 2010 Winter Ukulele Workshop Season. Bigger and bolder than ever before and arriving just at the right time to warm your winter chills, the WUWs are here to help you take your ukulele playing to the next level!
This year for the first time we have an Intermediate Workshop Series (as well as our ever-popular Beginner Workshop).
INTERMEDIATE WORKSHOP SERIES
The WIUO have been listening to our enthusiastic ukulele workshop community and by popular demand for the first time this winter we are offering an intermediate workshop series – yaaay, crowd goes wild!
This course is for those who have completed our 2008 or 2009 beginner workshops and are now ready, under the loving direction of members of the WIUO, to take their ukulele playing to a new dimension (meaning Dan has a new Venn diagram to talk us through!).
Come prepared to be challenged mentally and musically.
To take part in the intermediate workshop series you should have either:
• Completed our 2008 or 2009 beginners workshops, and/or
• Be able to play at least six chords (including E); and be able to play several songs on the ukulele competently i.e. be able to strum in time with others, and change chords in time.
• Bonus Brownie Points (BBP) if you know a bar chord or two, and if you have a little bit of basic understanding of music theory.
Some of the topics that will be covered are:
• Finger picking
• Playing a melody
• Accents and strumming patterns
• Triple strum
• Improvising
• Pick vs. fingers
• Choosing chord voicings
• Chord Shape theory (CST)
• Bar chords
• Arranging parts in an ensemble

ESSENTIAL INFORMATION
• BYO ukulele (essential)
• A ukulele tuner (really handy to have, but not essential for workshops)
• Based on experience, we reckon the youngest ideal age for our workshops is 8. The oldest has not yet been reached!
• All workshops will start on time. Please arrive 15 minutes early to tune up and get comfortable.
If you don’t yet own a ukulele, you can buy one from most reputable music
stores, but we suggest you see Alistair and Katrina at Alistairs Music, 215 Cuba Street, Central Wellington. They are ready to look after you.
