Randa Takes Critic's Choice Prize 2014
Rap artist Randa was awarded the Critic's Choice Prize at a showcase in Auckland last night. The 21-year-old rapper, along with limber limbed producer Totems, went head-to-head with the two other finalists Lake South and Estere at the packed Kings Arms Tavern, with each act having 30-minutes to perform. Following the sets, Randa was selected as the winner by a panel of pundits from the music industry.
The prize, which is part of the 2014 Vodafone New Zealand Music Awards, comes with a $10,000 recording and music video grant from NZ On Air. The Critic's Choice Prize is in it's fifth year running, and judges are tasked with selecting a up-and-coming artist that has the potential to become a future Tui winner. Previous winners include Kimbra, Street Chant, Watercolours and Sheep, Dog & Wolf.
Randa says of the win: “I’m just super blown away. I can’t wait to celebrate with my family and friends. This grant means I can record a project and get back in studio.”
