Premiere: Samuel Holloway Remixes Title Track To Dudley Benson's 'Zealandia'
Dunedin avant-pop singer and producer Dudley Benson is releasing his long-awaited third studio album Zealandia next month, which means we've been treated to a stellar run of carefully conceived multimedia experiences and impeccably curated remixes in the lead up to that record. We're thrilled to premiere a fresh cut from the latter category, a senses-scrambling remix by Auckland-based composer and SOUNZ Contemporary Award finalist Samuel Holloway of the title track to Zealandia. The new version slices and dices Benson's vocals from the original, flipping the song inside out to create an immersive and slightly disorienting, yet still intensely rhythmic, aural landscape. Holloway kindly took time out to share some words on his reimagining of 'Zealandia'...
"The original track is so rich with material and possibility, but I decided to focus on Dudley’s voice only… it felt important that this remained at the centre of my remix. I broke the vocal part down to a set of fragments that I could refashion and recontextualise, and the result is something of a departure from my usual aesthetic world, and that of the original."
Dudley Benson's 'Zealandia' is out Friday 10th August.
