Auckland's Jaded Nineties Raver Shares Debut Single 'Free For A Fee'
Auckland dance producer Jaded Nineties Raver (aka Marie Celeste of Pig Out) has released her debut solo single and title track to upcoming album Free For A Fee via Wellington experimental label End Of The Alphabet Records. An urgent pounding kick leads listeners though Celeste’s dark and moody sonic landscape, with distressed electronics aimed squarely at blackened club environments. When not recording solo, Celeste works alongside artist Keepsakes in organising HAVEN, “a night that hosts international techno producers with a harder-edged European sound.” We caught up with the artist who kindly took time out to share her ideas around the upcoming album…
“I like a lot of types of music and I kind of wanted to bring a few of those different influences together. Like the washy distorted moodiness of shoegaze and the dark intensity of harder edged techno. The songs have slow atmosphere but the BPMs are still up there.
It’s been good to be making music again, I forgot how cathartic it can be. It’s been especially nice having my own project that doesn’t need to fit into anyone else’s ideals. I recorded it at home and all the tracks are live takes, it has a rough around the edges lo fi feel to it that I kinda like and I felt suited these early tracks. It’s been close to 10 years since I’ve made music and I’ve had a very kind of carefree attitude towards it which as been refreshing.
In saying that I do really like working with other people too, so it’s spurred me into another project with my partner in life, crime and HAVEN, Keepsakes. We’re heading back to Europe next year with it all, there’s a few things to let out of the bag yet but suffice to say, 2018 is going to be a big year!”
Jaded Nineties Raver's debut album 'Free For A Fee' is out Thursday 16th November via End Of The Alphabet Records.
