Kamasi Washington Sheds Light On New EP + Unveils Video For 'Truth'
Free jazz force of nature Kamasi Washington was last on our shores for the inaugural Auckland City Limits festival in support of his accurately titled 2015 LP The Epic. Today he has shared the first single from the follow up EP, Harmony of Difference. Titled ‘Truth’, the 13-minute cut is an exploration into the depths of musical imagination, and as if that weren’t enough, the new track is accompanied by a short film, which is directed by A.G. Rojas, who has worked the likes of Run The Jewels, Jack White and Leonard Cohen.
The release of Harmony of Difference signifies Washington’s move to prestigious London label Young Turks, whose impressive roster boasts the likes of The xx, Sampha, FKA Twigs, et al. The EP itself is comprised of six movements, the first five being unique compositions, with ‘Truth’ - the sixth and final instalment - fusing all five previous movements into one grandiose arrangement. Reflecting this technique in visual art, Washington’s sister Amani Washington designed five paintings focusing on raw shapes and colours and combined them in a sixth and final abstract rendering of a human face.
