Seven Quick Questions: Soda Boyz

Over the past two years SODA BOYZ have been carving a name out for themselves in their hometown of Palmerston North and beyond. Forming in 2014 while at school, they took the route that many high school bands do - they entered Rockquest, and made it all the way through to the National Finals for that year.

Since then the trio have sporadically teased listeners with singles including ‘Slayer Shirt’, ‘Das Dreamland’, and most recently with their Shellac-like single ‘Team Rockit’. This Thursday will see the band get out on the road with their Auckland-based pals Yukon Era for a string of shows in support of their highly anticipated debut EP, By SODA BOYZ, which was recorded at local Palmy institution The Stomach. Ahead of the tour had a quick chat with the boyz to find out a little more about what makes them tick…

 

1. Hey! Firstly - Can you tell us who you are and and your roles in the band?

We're SODA BOYZ from Palmy. I’m Jules - guitar/vox and we also have Josh - drums/beat boxing and Felix - bass/guitar/vox.

2. You have been playing together a while now. When did you guys form and what was the catalyst?

We formed I guess two years ago, Josh and I started jamming, I was terrible at guitar and just made bad noise so Felix came in and made sense of us two.

3. How do you find the Palmy music scene? What are the best bits about it and how do you think it could be improved?

Palmy has the best music scene. There's been lots of awesome bands and there are definitely some more coming. More gigs and people would be cool.

4. You've played shows like Rockquest and Age Old Fest, and with Palmy having two all ages venues (until recently) it seems as if you guys are big supporters of the all ages scene?

Definitely, all the good gigs in Palmy are all ages. We were underage two years ago and if it wasn’t for all ages gigs there wouldn’t be anything good in Palmy now.

5. Where did the name SODA BOYZ come from? Is there a backstory?

Nope - We should probably change it.

6. For people who may not have heard of you, how would you describe your music?

The good kind of Emo. Straight rip off of Ohana, Duster, and Fader.

7. You recently released the single ‘Team Rockit’? Is this going to be on an EP/Album?

Yea we have an EP coming out pretty soon. We recorded it a while ago so some of the song have changed since then. Not many plans for the rest of the year apart from the Yukon Era gigs, we’re all pretty unorganised so we don’t really plan too far ahead. We’ll probably do stuff though.
