Homegrown music-comedy juggernaut The Wellington International Ukulele Orchestra will pair up with “the best ukulele soloist in the world” James Hill in an incredible double bill of ukulele magic at The Hunter Lounge, Victoria’s Student Union Building, Wellington, Sunday 24 February.
The superb musicians of The Wellington International Ukulele Orchestra mix heavenly harmonies and stunning solos with madcap antics and mini instruments, creating “entertainment of the highest order” (TVNZ) and bringing sell-out, sing-along audiences to their feet.
They are bringing the “utterly world class” Canadian James Hill back to the capital to repeat a stunning sell-out show they did together two summers ago, after which Hill was invited to perform in last year’s NZ International Arts Festival.
Hill is “one of the world’s top composers [for the ukulele] and probably the best player on the planet”. With just four strings he enchants amazed audiences. No looping pedals were harmed in this jaw-dropping reimagining of Michael Jackson’s Billie Jean (see below for link to the video). Hill, whose parents are New Zealanders, says “New Zealand is heart-land for me. Just thinking of this tour makes my head spin. Anything could happen!”
Spontaneity and improvisation are central to the magic of this line-up, meaning this will be a show like no other during what promises to be an incredible tour of ukulele skills and thrills from New Zealand’s “national treasures” (TVNZ) and Canada’s “ukulele sex symbol” (Ukulelehunt.com).
Tickets are on sale now at www.undertheradar.co.nz, and Slow Boat Records.
